Congratulations to the 59 successful candidates - 42 signatory cities, 11 not-for-profit organisms and 6 regions and provinces - that have been selected to participate in our peer-learning programme*.
The new programme builds on the success of the Covenant of Mayors twinning programme, and offers cities, regions, and provinces across Europe the opportunity to take part in exchanges that aim to increase their capacity and knowledge through tailored peer discussions to tackle their climate and energy challenges.
Our new and improved programme includes 4 separate programmes – twinning, expert mission, peer review, technical assistance - offering tailored learning opportunities according to the needs and expertise of candidates. They ensure we can provide support to the whole CoMmunity, wherever you are on your climate journey.
A revised Twinning Programme offers municipalities the chance to tackle issues ranging from energy efficiency in buildings and mobility to nature-based solutions for climate adaptation! While each city has the opportunity to learn and share their expertise, they are paired with a city that would provide the best exchange possible; this means that they could learn from one city but share their own expertise with another (that would benefit more). Here, we create a chain reaction of exchanges, always ensuring the best match possible for learning.
Our newly designed Expert Mission gives advanced cities, regions, and provinces the chance to exchange with experts to work on long-term climate strategies, including moving towards climate neutrality, creating climate pacts, and exploring challenges related to governance. This is a great new opportunity offering a tailored programme for those frontrunner cities, regions and provinces driving the transition locally.
A new Peer Review programme has been created to provide tailored advice to cities on their Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP). Cities with particular challenges in relation to their SECAP will get expert advice from energy agencies, with each city’s measure reviewed by multiple reviewers ensuring a range of views and the best advice possible.
Finally, our new Technical Assistance programme targets smaller municipalities offering tailored advice on how to successfully apply to funding. Three full-day workshops tackling various aspects of applications will offer municipalities the chance to exchange on their challenges with peers and get expert advice from those in the know!
The Covenant of Mayors Europe Office received and evaluated over 138 applications for this call. Successful candidates overall were those that provided concrete details in regard to their current status, challenges and expertise, and gave evidence of their commitment to the programme. Evidence of status, clear learning ambitions and an expression as to why an applicant wanted to take part was the basis for allocating applicants to a particular programme.
Are you interested in joining this programme in the future? Watch this space for the next call for applications! We’ll be opening the call early next year for the next phase of our peer learning programme in 2022 – there will be more opportunities to partner with cities across Europe to exchange, learn and be inspired to take concrete action wherever you are on your climate journey.
Participants to the Twinning Programme and Expert Mission have met their partners for the first time. In the initial meeting, partners introduced themselves and shared details of the challenges and expertise that will be explored throughout the programme.
